50th Anniversary by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm currently working though old issues of "Hi Fi News" building an index.
Came across a timely snippet.
17th April 1966 was when the BBC boadcast their first 'live' concert in
*stereo* as part of the normal schedules. It was during the afternoon, and
timed to be during the Hi Fi Show that was running at the time. This was a
'bonus' as they also had a low power TX running during the show,...

Whining on audio when computer connected to amp. by
Brian Gaff
I have been trying to make my new computer integrate with my stereo system.
However even using a Behringer usb sound interface still produces a whine
and general hash low level to playback signals, though not noticed on the
recording if its transferred to cd and played normally. The question is that
as things are plugged into the usb the tone and loudness varies, so I
suspect its either the...

Hi Fi / audio forum choice? by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I'm not a fan of 'forums' but given the impression that few people now use
newsgroups or indeed email lists I'm wondering if it is worth trying one
that is UK focussed and aimed at audio / Hi Fi. Hoping to get more info for
things like tracking down the documents / info I seek these days.
Someone has suggested the 'Pink Fish' forum. It does seem to have a UK
feel, and is apparently moderated....

Quest continues for 'historic' info... by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Thought I'd raise this here in case someone can help.
I've continued to do background research on the history of Armstrong Audio
/ Wireless in particular, but also other UK makes, etc in general. Since
the start of 2016 I've mainly been trawling pre-1960 issues of magazines,
back to the 1930 and collating what I'm finding.
However there are two things from the 1970s which I haven't been able...

Utility for measuring average decibels across a collection of sound files? by
Ian McCall
Hi - I originally posted this in uk.comp.sys.mac and was recommended to
try here as well.
Does anyone know if there's a utility to get average decibels from an
audio track, where 'an audio track' could mean wav, aif, mp3, or mp4
(as in I'd convert to whatever's necessary)?
Context: am trying to prepare a number of different music tracks to be
at the same level. It's my music so I have...

Quad FM4 Battery by
RJH[_4_]
I've taken the cover off, and noticed the battery seems to be leaking
slightly:
https://flic.kr/p/EdXFsh
There's a white furry deposit around what I assume to be the battery -
the blue thing centre top. The underside of the circuit board looks fine.
Is a replacement straightforward? I can solder after a fashion.

Armstrong 600 era by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
Just to let people know I've put up a new webpage at
http://www.audiomisc.co.uk/Armstrong/reviews/silicon/EarlySiliconEra.html
This documents the 1973-4 period when they released the 600 range and it
got a lot of attention. Can be interesting to compare reviews to see when
they agree and when they conflict. :-)
FWIW I'm planning two more pages.

Removing medium and long wave stations by
Brian Gaff
I have noticed fewer Medium wave stations as per a previous thread, but not
on Long wave. Indeed the Irish station is beating with a French language
station. Sounds like bloody minded ness, as there would be room for one of
them to move it seems.

High speed mono cassette copiers?
We have a lot to dump and it seems a shame to do this, but nobody seems to
need to copy audio cassettes any more.
These are Sony ones several slaves and a master the slaves have four bays
the master has three all cables are there though longer mains cables might
be needed but are the same as computers use.
We also have a set of four stereo copiers as well...

Couple of cd queries, model numbers later by
Brian Gaff
OK I have a not that old but out of warranty Marantz cd player which is
supposed to and did play cdrw disc.
However over a time its stopped doing this and now has issues on some,
mainly home made but some commercial, discs as well. This manifests itself
as hunting either at the start or when you manually move a track u the
listing. It hunts for a couple of seconds then gives up with an...

unknown speakers, worth a gamble? by
Brian Gaff
I was looking around various sites for some relatively cheap speakers for
my bedroom that do not sound like cardboard boxes, and are not of the
younguns megabase as used by DJ Plonker etc, and the name Beng came up. It
only seems to have outlets via Amazon, and the reviews on there should I
feel be taken with a pinch of salt. they say the packaging was rubbish
resulting in damaged cabinets...

HDMI screens/monitors and high rez audio by
Jim Lesurf[_2_]
I've recently been writing a program to 'probe' HDMI monitors or screens to
see what audio modes they accept. The results have prompted me to wonder
about their limits.
I've only seen results from a few. But all the ones I've got data on only
work for LPCM sample rates up to 48k max. Which would leave 'high rez'
audio out in the cold. (And when sent 44.1k the seem to dumbly resample it
48k upon...

Media library advice please, Windows by
Sumatriptan
This must have been discussed before but I'm wondering what people here
are using these days.
I've sort of managed with the Microsoft WMP offering until now but I'm
sure there are better library managers around. Advice for me to generate
a short list would be appreciated. I'm probably going to be looking at
MediaMonkey and Foobar2000 which happen to be freebies. Any others I
should check?...

That's me done for Christmas. Off to Vienna first thing in the morning
with a few friends to escape all the cooking and general misery. So
happy Christmas everyone.

MOSFET amp - thump at switch on. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Common way to stop the thump you can tend to get with a MOSFET amp at
switch on was a relay on the speaker output.
It occurred to me that in these days of cheap high power triacs it might
be better to ramp up the AC into the amp - even if it uses a conventional
power supply?
Comments welcome. ;-)

Decent phono cable. by
Dave Plowman (News)
Need some well screened co-ax 'phono' cable. A quick look at CPC shows
only the usual lapped screen variety. Which I already have.
Basically, I need to run an unbalanced circuit close to some mains
lighting wiring which has a dimmer. And the stuff I have is letting in
buzz.
Tried some RG 59 I have lying around which eliminates the buzz - but I
don't have enough and would prefer a more flexible...
