Anyone know a good supplier of cheap banana plugs (need to be stackable) and
RCA / phono plugs (or decent quality cheap cables already made up)?

The ****e wot is writ here... by
Keith G
There are a few 'wiseacres' here that know it all and will trot out the
stale, old 'FR drivers in horns have no top or bottom octave' hearsay
horse****.
Judge for yourselves - here are two 'identical' clips (end of one track,
beginning of another) of extremely complex/crowded music recorded OPEN MIC
with only a peewee little lapel mic (all I got) with digital/SS everything
except the power...

Too damn old for this silliness... by
Keith G
Nick has very kindly loaned me his superb Behringer ECM 8000 measurement mic
for me to do my speaker investigations and a very handy disk with test tones
and various tracks on it - including some 'bangs' which, of course, are only
there to entertain immature types who never got over such silly, schoolboy
stuff....
.....so, here are two versions of the same 3 short tracks (machine gun,...

Iain thinks I'm a schmuck.... by

Just to balance up all the 'MOR' (??) stuff I've been posting, here's summat
from about 800 years back*:

Dual mono again (only because I buggered the LP to HDD direct recording up!)
and not too good because I compressed it to 160K MP3.....
I love it, I wonder if anyone else does...??

Classic amp by
Patrick Wallace
Anyone know what a Yamaha CA-1000 amp is worth?
Classic from 1974. 100w per channel in Class AB, a quarter that when
switched into Class A (producing to my senses no perceptible change in sound
but a marked increase in heat output). Fully working after I replaced a few
tired caps and transistors a couple of years ago. Could probably do with
new power supply caps (slight hum on Class A) but...

Squash balls and bricks by
Jack
I also read recently in a Hi-Fi glossy about
placing cut-in-half squash balls underneath your
components' feet and a brick on top of each
speaker to improve the sound.
Now that would be an interesting experiment but I
don't expect MAGIC to happen!

Speaker Advice by
[email protected]
Dear All
Quite a few years back my father changed his hi-fi/tv kit to all B&O,
he gave me his CD and AMP, I think he only used headphones then, hence
no speakers came my way!
The Amp is an Audiolab 8000A, the CD an Arcam Alpha 7, I think of
mid/late 90s vintage, from memory I recall this was pretty good kit
that I could not afford as a student!

CD burning - album info? by
Malcolm Stewart
Using Nero on my old PC (Win98SE etc.), I was able to burn the "Album" info
plus "track info" to the CD, as well as the music tracks. On my new PC
(WinXP with Realplayer, Sonic & Windows Media applications on offer) I seem
to be able to burn music and track info but not the "Album" name.
Am I missing something or do I need to buy the latest version of Nero to get
this functionality...

CD for sound stage demo by

Hi
I am interested to hear which is your favourite CD
for demonstrating your systems' sound stage.
I would imagine a recording of chamber music or
something similar.

Ear Plugs? by
[email protected]
Hi. I hope that this group is appropriate for this question.
I was recently at a rock concert and was lucky enough to find a spot
near the stage. The show was great, but too loud. I had a pair of
cheap earplugs that the health department gives out, so I slipped them
in. The music then sounded awful. I noticed the guys in the band used
ear plugs also, but I assume that their plugs didn't...

How hard should my balls be? by
Keith G
I'm in the process of chopping a nice little DD deck:
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/show/Chopper.JPG
Which is already much better since I removed the dodgy 'suspension' and
clamped it directly to a piece of, er, kitchen worktop - which has produced
a much richer and 'fatter' sound already, but I need some feet which will
work at least as well as (and look better than) two bath sponges and...

Good ear plugs? by
[email protected]
I tried posting this question before, but didn't see it posted, if it
gets posted twice, I apologize.
I'd like a good pair of ear plugs that will help me minimize hearing
loss at loud rock concerts while allowing me to hear the music clearly
without that muffled sound that cheap earplugs give.
I've seen musicians where plugs, but don't know what they are.
Does anyone know a good brand?

Converting LP to CD (yet again I suppose!) by
Grumps
Hi All
I have decided to convert some of my old LPs onto CD. Yes I could go and buy
these CDs, and yes I could illegally download MP3 versions too. But I don't
want to do either of these.
I have my old RP3 connected (via Nait amp) to the input of my Sony
camcorder. This then allows me to capture the audio via firewire, possibly
better quality than my PC's onboard sound input.
