If you can't be bothered to read all the ins and outs, here is Trevor
Wilson's own description of how Rage Audio does business:

service two, stereo, 3 Watt (PP) valve amps. Unfortunately, apart from
several buggered valves, all the electros, many of the resistors and
most of
the old plastic capacitors also required replacement, it had three (out

four) faulty output transformers. This would have put the price into
the
ridiculous area. Then, I had an idea. I put a pair of small power OP
amps in
each amp. I put a LF and HF filter in front of each OP amp and ran
the
whole shebang off the filament supplies. I left the valves in place and

told
the client that I had fixed his amp. If was in any way unhappy with the



result, I would refund his money, in full. The cost, of course, was
significantly lower than replacing all the faulty stuff. After he'd
used it
for a week, he reported that his amps had never sounded so good."

In other posts in the threads referenced Trevor Wilson admits that he
did not tell the customer that he changed operation of the customer's
amplifier from tubes to solid state.


Trevor Wilson is a fraud for fundementally altering a customer's amp
without telling the customer. Trevor Wilson is a thief for stealing the

customer's right of choice. Trevor Wilson took money for these
deceitful activities. Now he brags about it on the net. Would you take
your amp to be fixed at Rage Audio by Trevor Wilson?

If the repair was uneconomical and the customer was pleased, I would call

If the repair was uneconomical and the customer was

The customer wanted a valve amp. Not an HY60 or a TDA2030 or whatever.

It was deception. End of.

The acid test is: Would the customer still be happy if he knew what
was "under the hood"? And if Trevor is so convinced the customer was/is
happy, why not just tell the customer what he'd done?

Better yet, why not present BOTH options to the customer before undertaking
any work? To repair the valve amp would cost X hundred dollars, or to plumb
in a perfectly good, but cheap, SS amp would cost just a few dollars. Let
the customer decide! That seems to me to be the most professional approach.

He lied.

I am not sure I agree with the fix unless the customer was fully informed of
the methodology of the repair. For example, suppose that customer eventually
listed his amp on eBay and you purchased it. Would you be a happy camper?
How should the customer (now seller) feel when you demand a refund and cry
fraud?

I would demand a refund and compensation. I am very particular that either original parts are used or better - and clearly advised in advance of the same.
I agree its a lie and a deception at the owners expense, that was an outcome that suited mr trevor Wilson aka 'zaphod beeblebrox' (as he is also known in other forums) as it was easier for him.
He was constantly trying to convince me to forego my valve preamp project and buy his overpriced ME preamps instead. Unfortunately I found him the most unhelpful and antagonistic person in my diy thread on a diy forum, where he appeared to parade his perceived 'expertise' but refused to actually be helpful in real terms - when asked.
I decided I would avoid him based on this, but now knowing this I would definitely avoid him myself - period.
