Any quick opinions on the Bose Lifestyle 35 anyone.

I'm looking at buying a very neat and compact Hi-Fi with home theatre
capability and most important... small speakers (need to keep wife off the
case!). The Bose system seems to fit the bill nicely but having never had a
Bose before I was wondering are they any good? Reliable? decent sound in an
ordinary room (as opposed to a test room)?

Any opinions/help appreciated.

Bose have a reputation for being nicely styled, overpriced and giving
mediocre-to-fair performance.

But if small size and looks are paramount, I guess you're stuck in
that market sector ;-(

I heard a Bose system of this ilk in a shop recently. What was coming
out of it can only be described as an objectional travesty of natural
sound.

Not only - it could also be described as crap.

However, let's give it a chance. A 2" paper cone speaker is no use to
anybody so if we replace the satellite speakers with something
costing at least £4 each from Richer Sounds, including a decent
tweeter and a 3" midrange unit, then we may get something like hi-fi....

As the subwoofer works up to ~250Hz (figures not available from Bose)
which is too high to be non-directional, it should be placed in the
centre front, under the TV.

We know that all CD players sound the same and that amplifiers, if not
overdriven, sound the same. So, given the above circumstances,
a Bose Lifestyle 35 should sound "OK".

What does it cost in the UK?

Roger.

I've found the "Bose Lifestyle 35 Digital" listed at £3,300
No, that isn't a misprint! THREE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED POUNDS.

Don't fall for it.

Take a look at the Energy Encore set, seems to do a good all-round job.
Plays music with reasonably fidelity, and keeps my wife happy

The main reason I am looking at this unit is obviously size. I do want good
sound though. As the LS35 also plays DVD's I will also save some space
there.

The price of £3300 is just stupid, I know, but they can be sourced quite
easily as US imported stock. I hear the header unit will work with 240volt
but the base woofer unit needs an adapter which is usually supplied with the
kit when you buy it. Other that that, I am told, there is no difference...
aside from the price of course - £2600! (yes, a saving of £700!!!). Another
"rip the Brit's off" case! Some places actually have these in stock here in
the UK.

So, at £2600, is it worth looking at or is it really as crap as some say?

For that amount of money (with or without the £700 saving), it truly is a
piece of complete and unadulterated crap.

A few people have told me that and I don't dount their judgement but why is
it crap? sound quality? build quality? reliability?

If you genuinely have a budget of £2.5K, you can get some top notch gear
which you will be happy with for many years to come.

I realise that with my budget I can source great equipment but the size and
looks of the speakers are of paramount importance as I only have a small
house and don't want big speakers on the walls. I currently have a mix of
Sony and pioneer equipment which is over 10 years old. I have JBL studio
monitor speakers with a JBL base unit. The sound is brilliant. Are you
saying that a Bose system will not sound as good?

Sorry if I sound thick but I am! I am not up on latest Hi-Fi hence my visit
here.

Hi,

if size matters then I would consider the KEF KHT 2005.2 surround speakers, very small but
with a superb award winning sound http://www.kef.co.uk/.

Of all the dozens & dozens of comments I've read about Bose it's always "Nice design,
shame about the sound". Don't be tempted as you are spending a lot of money! Surely your
ears must count for something!!
