Playing right now on my new 'computer setup' (£50 Technics amp, £10 Eltax
bookshelf speakers from eBay) and sounding reet nice - mono, due to ****e
aerial situation atm......

:-)

Well U had the chance;_)

Be interesting to measure the old LEAK and see what its capable of up
against some more modern equipment?....

I know I did, but I actually *like* mono - especially for radio as I'm never
sat right in front of it!

I have upgraded my tuner, the Quad FM4 has been replaced by a Magnum

Dynalab
Etude, its recently been replaced by the MD100 so its out of date

already.

Would you mind me asking how much your FM4 tuner would be worth on the
second-hand market in the UK? I have tried without success to buy an FM
tuner here in New Zealand for about 5 years now they are rarer than hens
teeth here.
My Quad 34/405 amp is celebrating its 20 birthday this year and still

going
strong and I would like to get the tuner to go with it.

You can't have been looking that hard as there have been several Quad tuners
and even complete 33/303/FM3, 44/405/FM4 systems listed on Trademe.

:P

That costs more than what a good pro VHF/FM modulator does!....

And much more than many older tuners with Magnum beating performance

Wasn't it Dersu who spent 5 years looking for a tuner ?

The site is Trademe, an NZ based auction site.
Won't be of much use to folks outside NZ.

I have never looked for anything on Trademe though I do know a couple of
people who have bought stuff through them.
Thanks for the tip anyway.

I've not measured it, but I have run a scope, etc, over the old Leak
Troughline mono tuner I have. Showed an alarming amount of leakage of both
the stereo diff and IF components emerging from the audio. The selectivity
is also a bit on the wide side for my taste, although not flat enough to
make adding a stereo decoder worthwhile without a lot of fiddling with the
IF.

Still have the tuner, but don't use it at all. Prefer the Yamaha, Quad,
etc.

Slainte,

Jim

No its stereo the MD-108 they make is valve hybrid but costs $5,800 in
US Canada the UK price is £5,600

It has two 12 AX 7 tubes in the final stage and a discrete
amplification system is designed to capture the ambiance

(so they say)

They actually make the decoder with valves?

I still have the Mullard circuits for this. Was temped to make one at one
time, but decided it was a waste of effort. :-)

In a world given to compromise, Magnum Dynalab has conceded nothing in
its approach to building their flagship tuner, the MD 108. Known for
manufacturing FM Tuners of unparalleled quality, famous for their
balance of Sensitivity, Selectivity and Sonic performance, it was only a
matter of time before Magnum Dynalab achieved the pinnacle of FM Tuner
performance. Manfred Breunig, designer of Magnum Dynalab products, is
confident the MD 108 is that achievement.

Designed and constructed with the music lover in mind, the MD 108 is a
hybrid tuner utilizing a truly new ANALOG R.F. section with precise
MAGIC EYE tube tuning and a separate audio stage developed to exacting
standards, utilizing two 12 AX 7 tubes in the audio switching stage.

A precision tuning pot ensure optimum resolution from the five stage
varactor front end.

One of the advantages of valves is their high operating voltage, seems a
shame to compromise this by using varactors. Can no-one build a decent
mechanical variable cap set these days?

I haven't run both tuners on the same kit, but I wouldn't say the Leak is as
good as my old Luxman, but then it's maybe just what I'm used to.....??
