I have upgraded my tuner, the Quad FM4 has been replaced by a Magnum

Dynalab
Etude, its recently been replaced by the MD100 so its out of date already.

I am very pleased, its sounds fantastic, took it apart (pictures of

insides
on web site) not a lot inside.

Would have liked, one of the tuners that are valved, but they are silly
money.

Nice bit of 'Show N Tell' Dave! :-)

I too have had a little movement on the tuner front.....

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keit...w/newtuner.jpg

.....this little gem arrived yesterday - a gift from someone who no longer
wanted it and was going to bin it.

Playing right now on my new 'computer setup' (£50 Technics amp, £10 Eltax
bookshelf speakers from eBay) and sounding reet nice - mono, due to ****e
aerial situation atm......

:-)

Well U had the chance;_)

Be interesting to measure the old LEAK and see what its capable of up
against some more modern equipment?....

Would you mind me asking how much your FM4 tuner would be worth on the
second-hand market in the UK? I have tried without success to buy an
FM tuner here in New Zealand for about 5 years now they are rarer
than hens teeth here.
My Quad 34/405 amp is celebrating its 20 birthday this year and still
going strong and I would like to get the tuner to go with it.

D.

You can get a second hand Quad FM4 tuner from £200 to £300
depending where you buy it, if it is din or phono and its colour

The other thing that makes a big differeance is has it had its back up
battery replaced?

early ones leak and can cause lots of damage.

will sell you one and export it to you

Mono only, I presume?

No its stereo the MD-108 they make is valve hybrid but costs $5,800 in US
Canada the UK price is £5,600

It has two 12 AX 7 tubes in the final stage and a discrete amplification
system is designed to capture the ambiance

(so they say)

Remote is an extra $500 :-(

That well-known Norfolk supplier isn't exactly known for low prices
though!

At the last NVCF at the N.E.C there were a couple for sale at around
£150

I wonder if they select especially microphonic ECC83s to provide even
more ambience :-)

Very true, but you know that its been checked, tested and any problems and
you can send it back.

Ebay can also be top prices, and most from there are as seen, or if its not
working they say "ok when i sent it"

That costs more than what a good pro VHF/FM modulator does!....

They actually make the decoder with valves?

Not sure the site say's

In a world given to compromise, Magnum Dynalab has conceded nothing in its
approach to building their flagship tuner, the MD 108. Known for
manufacturing FM Tuners of unparalleled quality, famous for their balance of
Sensitivity, Selectivity and Sonic performance, it was only a matter of time
before Magnum Dynalab achieved the pinnacle of FM Tuner performance. Manfred
Breunig, designer of Magnum Dynalab products, is confident the MD 108 is
that achievement.

Designed and constructed with the music lover in mind, the MD 108 is a
hybrid tuner utilizing a truly new ANALOG R.F. section with precise MAGIC
EYE tube tuning and a separate audio stage developed to exacting standards,
utilizing two 12 AX 7 tubes in the audio switching stage.

A precision tuning pot ensure optimum resolution from the five stage
varactor front end. With three ultra-sensitive bandwidth setting and
enhanced selectivity, you are ensured the best possible signal from any of
the four antenna inputs (two analog, two digital), each selected from the
front panel. An exclusive muting circuit eliminates unwanted inter-station
noise (auto blend circuit). To verify performance, the MD 108 employs two
accurately calibrated taut band analog meters to indicate multipath and
signal strength. In unison with these meters, a unique quad MATRIX EYE tube
for centre tuning means there is little guess work in optimizing FM
reception. Low noise dual-gate MOSFET transistors and hand matched
resonators mated to double-sided, plated circuit boards provide peak
performance. The logic circuit which controls the tuner operation uses C-MOS
technology, which has very high noise immunity making external transients of
little impact. The logic circuit is controlled by gold plated momentary
switches. With the switches always in a uniform position, the MD 108
maintains a clean, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Not to be outdone by the specially designed front end, a separate CLASS A
audio stage was designed. Using components and technology, worthy of the
signal being received from the front end, the audio stage, using two 12 AX 7
tubes in the final stage and a discrete amplification system is designed to
capture the ambiance of the music. The BALANCED circuit using a pair of
bi-polar low noise transistors are cross coupled to ensure a precise
BALANCED signal to match your other higher performance components. The
Magnum Dynalab MD 108 establishes the new benchmark by which all other
tuners will be judged.

It also comes with a carrying case, made out of metal, not sure where your
going to take it

Well, that's impressive!.

Wow!, New magic eye tuning?. Really synthesised front ends are now
offering a frequency stability about as good as what the transmitter is
capable of!.

Why ever bother with valves, IC and transistors are just as good if not
better. Wonder what's so good about the front end?..

varactor front end. With three ultra-sensitive bandwidth setting and

Amazing, dunno of anyone else who's bothering with "precision pots of RF
tuning these days, bit olde world. Why ever don't they use synth
tuning?. Varactors eh?, same as what everyone else uses!..

Four aerial inputs Two analogue would be useful but Two digital!,
digital what?. Surely this wondrous beast isn't a diabolical digital
radio as well?..

Well if they had synth tuning then U wouldn't need all that palver of
the magik eye!. Sig strength meters are useful but multipath you should
hear it still I do hope it comes with a gold plated aerial;!

Low noise dual-gate MOSFET transistors and hand matched
resonators mated to double-sided, plated circuit boards provide peak
performance.

Been around for ages!.

Why not use valves to do this?.

Well now perhaps the broadcasters made a BIG mistake throwing out most
of their valve equipment, yes OK high power valve stages are used in x
kW power amps but this has no effect on the audio quality and they don't
use them in programme input or modulators and encoders!. Perhaps they
should, after all if the dogs doo-dahs of tuner designers reckons that a
few old triodes make all the difference, then perhaps Harris Broadcast
ought to give 'im a job!....

The BALANCED circuit using a pair of
bi-polar low noise transistors are cross coupled to ensure a precise
BALANCED signal to match your other higher performance components. The
Magnum Dynalab MD 108 establishes the new benchmark by which all other
tuners will be judged.

Well debatable, My Audiolab and REVOX tuners seem to give very good
performances without balanced lines, after all their only going a few
feet..

It also comes with a carrying case, made out of metal, not sure where your
going to take it

More money for the mugging to spend on and don't forget the snake oiled
mains cable and no doubt the rhodium plated aerial cable!;;
