Yeah, yeah...

'Homebrew Triode Fever Grips UK Audophiles' on Reuters then....??

More like Homebrew Transformer Fever - there could be some good dosh to be
saved. ;-)

I haven't had a chance to read this most interesting thread properly
yet, ...

Worth sitting down to with a brew.

... but if you are considering this route I wouldn't hesitate to
recommend Phil Ramsey of http://www.bluebellaudio.com/ for bits and
bobs at a *very* reasonable rate including Hammond iron at decent
prices, if you decide not to roll yer own. (Audio Note as well, I
gather, for those with deep pockets....??)

I think I need to build up a list of links...

Nick put me on to him and he's been superb so far. He promises he can
do everything - down to trannie fixings and hole punches - that
anyone might need for a build. My bits haven't arrived yet (not due
for a day or two) but the guy's 'interested' and very helpful.

Hole punches for transformers? Like, big square shapes?

If anyone does contact him, mention this ng - he didn't seem aware of
it and was pleased to hear there are still some genuine enthusiasts
(idiots) about!

(Might get a 'group disount or summat!! ;-)

I'll keep that in mind, but I have a pre-amp tart-up and a speaker rebuild
fantasy to cater for first. ;-) I'm gravitating towards making a prototype
of the tapered tube enclosure fairly soon - rather than spend far too long
trying to understand the theory of it, I'm just going to make one to the
dimensions that the artist in me decided looked right - I'll work out what
direction it has to go in once I hear it.

winding would then be hammered down. He explained that it was
transformer death to allow an air gap in there - it would make the
windings buzz. Each layer was topped with kraft paper, then the next
was started.

Did the paper go between each actual winding, or between each interleave?
(I'm assuming that an interleave can have more than one layer of turns.)

Oh, and take some time to plane a piece of wood that fits snugly
through the centre of the former while you are doing all this,
otherwise you will smash it.

Good point.

The winder I know paints lacquer on every layer before adding the

Duly noted.

Yeah, I did that with mine. I'm sure I've got an old book that tells you
what they're for... ...something to do with phase?

It went between every new layer where wire touched wire..

This is my 'Vinyl Links' page (unfinished of course) - fill yer boots.....

(Nick G might want to see the very first link I put on it some 18 months
ago! ;-)

Then go he

http://www.worldtubeaudio.com/

.....and give yourself a thrill!

(Check out the World Bike and Car Portal links while you're there - summat
for everyone! :-)

No, but nothing to stop you using them for 'starter holes' is there???

Yes, I'm kinda going to adopt a 'do it, then try and understand it' approach
to my own project....!!!

Tell you what is useful for odd shaped and even regular shaped holes in
ally is using a router designed for wood use!. I have a cheap trend one
for some 30 quid and some cheap bits for same. There is a very small dia
bit that has lasted very well cutting all manner of shapes in 16 SWG
ally sheet. Even if you waste a few, their quite cheap from the DIY
sheds and do work very well...

Interesting tip, but fortunately I'll not need to address this issue on my
first project as I'm expecting top-mounted trannies as in:

The most amazing coincidence - looked at that link and found this.....

http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/dixons.jpg

...... they've got the exact same thing in Dixons on 'Summer
Special'.......!!

;-)

(Posted for Shiny's benefit - he and his mates down at AN Audio spend all
day long checking on my 'Show N Tell Page' apparently, to see what we're up
to - this'll wind him up nicely! :-)

Attempting to produce a valve amp down to mid-fi prices, is doomed to
fail, either you can't do it, or you end up with something that just
echo's some of the assumptions that people make about what a valve amp
sounds like.

Hence kits and DIY. (I'm sure you'd be the first to agree that even the WAD
kits **** all over similarly priced 'mid fi' SS gear like Roksan, Arcam,
Cyrus etc.) But I'm inclined to disagree that *all* valve amps produced to
mid-fi prices (say, £500-1,500) are failures without having heard any of
them. Call it my instincts....
