My old amp died, after 30 years of faithful service. R.I.P.

I need a new one. Requirements are phono connection and
pre out/main in, necessary for my Bose 901 speakers which
have a compulsory equalizer.

Price limit is under £700.

Anyone have a recommendation?

Oke

Onkyo 701 Receiver $450.00 will prepare you for what is coming in new cd
formats as well as give you an
adequate phono stage. That leaves $700.00 to buy better speakers and a
subwoofer. Perhaps AE, NHT, or Mission
would float your boat. Another way to go would be Creek and Epos, but
that will cost you more money in the end.
There are IMHO better direct reflecting designs than Bose 901.
Definitive Technology makes speakers with built in subwoofers
that are bipolar (like my cousin) in that they fire front and back in
phase. This creates a more focused direct reflection
than what you are used to. The EQ with your speakers is primitive
compared to current crossover theory. I say leave it inside with the
speaker designer. You can adjust it through the controls on certain
subwoofers if you must. I am sorry that I am not better at the pounds
conversion
in my head, but I have not been to London since 1970!

I know nothing about the usual contents of Brit hi-fi shops, since I make my
amps myself, but I have been noticing some interesting valve amps going on
ebay. I'd buy something like this:

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I quite like the Bose 901s. Anyway i could not afford to buy anything
better today.
