Default Audacity problem

Apologies if this is considered off topic and if the description of the
problem is very non techy. I have a number of minidiscs I wish to copy to
CDR to listen to in the car.

I'm trying to use Audacity to record to wav, I've hooked a MD deck up to my
PC and the sound is great while the MD plays - however when I listen to the
wav created it is distorted at the loudest points. The recording level
seems too high, if I use volume control on the line in it seems to have no
differece while if I change the input volume within Audacity it records
everything at lower volume but with the same crashing at louder points.

Any tips on how I can record at lower levels ? thanks for any help

Does it look clipped, i.e., flat-topped in the Audacity dispaly?

Perhaps you are controlling the wrong line in. There are generally two, one
for playback and one for record. You have to go out of your way to get into
the record menu.

That is to be expected.

No level control on the output of the MD deck?
