Well it looks like my beloved 12 year old Sony CDP-X559ES is on it's way
out

It is all pointing to a transport problem. A few seconds (and always the
same few seconds) after pressing play at the start of the disk it skips
a bit (whatever disk is used), then occasionally it does the same thing
a few minutes later. Then it plays perfectly.

I think the optical transmitter is ****ed too, as every so often I'm
greeted with silence when using it

So ye folks with better technical nous than me, do you reckon I'm in the
right ball park?

Anyone know if this is repairable given the age of the beast. It's shame
to let this bugger be put to sleep as it's given me years of enjoyment
and is built like a brick ****house (it weighs about 40lbs!).

If it's past it can anyone recommend a suitable replacement? Bearing in
mind I'm strapped cashwise after forking out for some nice toys just
recently. I wouldn't mind a Genki but that's way too much for me at the
mo

F*ck the Genki - s'gotta be the DVDP/DAC (Tesco/secondhand) route, innit?

(Trouble with paying out good money to fix a 'modern oldie' is within a week
of getting it back, the sodding Power Switch or summat else fundamental goes
on the fritz.....)

My Roksan is doing this. 90% of the time it skips several times, but
only on track 1. Also, it will just displays zero's after skipping to
another track - refusing to do anything until the CD has been ejected
and put back in.

If its not the bloody car its something else!

You need one of those new Jap-tweaked (valve OP stage) high end jobs - I
think they're called Wadia-Noh?

I already have 2 DVD players but the one thing they are all naff (and I
include pretty much every DVDP on the market) at when it comes to the CD
side of things is the user side of things. Dedicated CD players are far
more user friendly and faster when it comes to the UI.

What you need to do is access the Service Menu and change the player to a
UK-specific command set and you'll probably get a scrolling display. Mine
goes like this:

Press open.

2 minutes later it opens.

Put disk in and press Play.

Tray goes in (after a while), player says READING DISK

Wait 5 minutes and press Play again.

Player says STILL READING DISK.

Wait 5 more minutes and press Play again.

Player says HOLD YER FEKKIN' HORSES - I'M ON TO IT!

Wait further 5 minutes, press Play again.

Player says SORRY - GOT DISTRACTED, COMING UP NOW....

:-)

You know far too much Keith, I reckon you are a UI interface engineer
for all the Japanese DVD manufacturers

AFAIAC it's CD players for CDs and DVD Players for DVDs and never the
twain shall meet.

Helllooo Kurt!

rap rap rap

are you hearing me?

Believe me when I say the Panasonic DMR-E50 is as good as any CDP I've ever
heard. Believe also yer mate SP when he says the Sony DVP-NS900 is as good
as any *sensibly* priced CDP - my son's got one (see
http://www.apah20.dsl.pipex.com/setup/setup.htm) - I've heard it hundreds of
times - it is! My mate Konrad has got the Sony DVP-S9000ES (see
http://members.rogers.com/jazzdude/) and he says it's the best digital music
spinner he has ever heard - I believe him! (Check out the rest of his kit -
ain't hardly Dixons is it?)

Yes, they're slow buggers to read the disk initially, but they're fine once
they're off (ignore my previous silliness!) and, to give you a clue: Mine's
been on all morning, playing my *own* selection and is on now Track No....

goes to see

177 now! ** (Didn't start from Track 1) - Just the job when you are too busy
eBaying to keep changing records!

Don't believe me? - Check my Show N Tell
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keith_g/show/show.htm in about 5 minutes
from now, when I have got the pic uploaded.

What I'm saying is, if you are strapped atm (anyone here who is not?) and
you've already got the DVDP, you only need a cheap DAC to put you straight
up there with the high rollers!!

Try it - buy summat half decent (£50 max - Arcam would be nice or even a
Cambridge Audio) and I'll take it off you if you don't agree!!!

:-)

** MP3s obviously and I don't want all that fekkin' claptrap about
quality - they sound *easily* as good as the radio (actually very good
indeed through valves, but I really *sooo* couldn't give a f*ck who believes
that or not) and the music easily beats the ****e that's on the daytime
radio these days!

Just my toupee...... ;-)

You've got me all piffed up now - stop ****balling around and let me know
when you're geared up and I'll send you an 'evaluation' copy of the same
disk (if you want it). See
http://www.apah69.dsl.pipex.com/keit...acklisting.jpg for the track
listing...

PS. Where's the pix for your webpage.....????

I was under the impression that my Tosh would play DVDs full of MP3s, it
doesn't

That would be getting on for summat like 1,500 tracks/80 hours solid
listening per disk at 128K CBR - bit excessive innit? (Spend more time
navigating the menu than listening to the music!!)

So currently I have my iPod wired up to the system listening to that

The Mordaunt Short speakers are great for movies, but quite frankly suck
for music. I'm desperately missing a dedicated music system

Glad to hear someone say that - the comix are behind them atm, but I've
never rated them ever since they first appeared.

As far as the DVDP goes, I just don't like the way it handles the disks.
The sound isn't too bad but just doesn't compare to the Sony going
direct analogue into the Naims .

Fairy nuff.

PS. Where's the pix for your webpage.....????

It's funny you should mention that. I've put some small pics of the
scraggy (but beautiful sounding) speakers on the page. Click on the pics
and it will open a slightly larger version.

Lovely old things an' all..

I'd put pics of the other stuff up but, frankly, the lack of room
decorating leads to a bit of embarrassment

Wot, like anyone else's drum is any different - do what we all do and crop
the pix real close! Dust is the worst thing on hifi gear - take a close look
at acrylic turntables, in particular, to see what I mean........

:-)
