I have a Pink Triangle record deck with a Rega RB300 arm and Rega
cartridge.

I noticed in the past that there was mains pickup when the arm gets too
near the motor - i.e. nearer to the centre of the record.

Now I have mounted the deck above my CD player, it's picking up hum from
there also.

Can I fix this with some earthing arrangement, or does the deck just
have to be away from any other mains device?

The Amp has an earth stud, but the deck doesn't have one. The deck uses
an outboard PSU for the motor drive.

Yup. Pickups have a tendency to ....er....pick up things. Like
electro-magnetic radiation.

You hope that a well-designed turntable will not suffer noticeable
pick-up from its own motor (though, with volume up, you'll always hear
SOME pickup). But, if it's on top of another unit and picks up
audible hum, there's a rather obvious solution.

There's a lot of rubbish spoken about how to mount hi-fi components.
If you advertised a concoction of goat's dung and rancid butter, and
you charged a high enough price, half-a-dozen nutters will swear on
the Bible: "Even my wife heard the difference!" :-)
But a turntable does deserve a firm support, out of the way of being
directly blasted by the speakers, and of other gear's mains
transformers.

It usually depends on the type of cartridge - some are much more
susceptible to hum pickup than others. MC types tend to be the best

I ran my Pink with an RB300 for several years without problems but may just
have been lucky with the cartridge. I now have a Zeta which has an earth
wire, absolutely no problems with respect to the motor. You could easily
try running an earth from the arm board to your pre amp to see if this helps
the problem, Rega arms are not earthed but there is nothing to stop you
fitting one. The PT Too power supply is just an amplifier that synthesises
a 50Hz signal and amplifies it up to drive the motor. This should not be a
source of hum but you could check to see if the cable is connected correctly
with a multimeter.

As it happens I have been using the Goat's dung/ rancid butter concoction for
years but have recently discovered that if you wrap those little glass bottles
in your amp' with cooking foil the effect is truly outstanding. Keep on taking
the tablets.

But, back to the topic: classic Pink Triangles are good turntables and
should not be providing motor hum. My original PT certainly doesn't
supply any hum from its DC motor to any carts, including a Rega Bias.
If earthing the tonearm doesn't sort the problem, then I would suggest
getting an MC cart. Perhaps a high output Dynavector. The deck will
respond well to an arm upgrade too, but that's another story.

My amp didnt have any glass bottles so I trid wrapping a plastic pill
bottle in foil and putting it in there.

Now I dont hear any noise. I dont hear anything at all actually. Thanks
for your superb tip on noise reduction.

Why, I have the input valves in my phono stage in shielding cans, whats
wrong with reducing RF pickup ?
