At a hundred quid a pop for a portable tranny, they must be barking.

No Wally, they're doing just fine - it's the ****s who are buying them who
must be 'barking'........

I thought my recent acquisition of a Freeview digibox would give me a)

Wrong (*very* wrong) on both counts!

Well, I'm enjoying things like "ISIRTA" and "The Navy Lark" on BBC7. :-)

Mind you, audiophile quality sound is not a pre-requisite for these - just
sounding somewhat better than my decades-old reel-to-reel tapes. :-) The
Angus Prune Tune sounds OK to me via freeview.

I apologise if ths question has been asked before in this group but can

Dunno, why not ask them?, is a good start.

About another 20 years is a fairly good guess....

Great! :-) I think DAB is pretty low quality, much worse sounding than FM
(apart from FM hiss, which doesn't bother me)

Dunno why people are buying digital radios. Hype & marketing I guess.

Er no. DAB is quite superb - provided the bit rate is high enough. It's the
BROADCASTERS who have made it bad by going for quantity not quality.

Me neither. (But then that's just me - I also don't suffer from tape hiss or
'background or surface' noise from vinyl either. In all the cases the sonic
benefits far outweigh any so-called 'disadvantages!)

In most locations a good outdoor FM aerial will make FM almost
hissless!...

I thought my recent acquisition of a Freeview digibox would give me a)
'acceptable' (in a sonic wallpaper sort of way) 'digital radio' and b)
endless Jazz on 'Jazz FM' (FM???).

Ah!, No money in a continuos Jazz station hence the drift to chillout
musak but then again nowt that much wrong with that idea either, just a
pity that the Jazz or most of it got lost along the way.....

Now if you want real Jazz etc a digital satellite receiver and an
aerial, 60 cm dish will do, on Eutelsat or ASTRA on 19 east will provide
some excellent Jazz sources. Try a post to alt.satellite.tv.europe for
more info, or look it up on
www.lyngsat.com and search out 13 and 19
east as well as good Jazz there will be Bayern from Germany at 256
K/bits to hear what the BBC *could* have done with digi radio:-((

Shouldn't cost you that much either hundred quid or so..

Wrong (*very* wrong) on both counts!

Don't suppose any of those satelite stations have a web stream?
