Anyone know of (hopefully free) software which will give a real time
display of energy bands?

If say you fed white noise into an amp and the output to the PC, it gives
a graphic of the energy at different frequencies - a sort of instant
frequency response trace.

Thing like Audacity can analyse a recorded sample afterwards - I was
looking for something which will do it in real time.

You could use something from the set

!IyoScope / ROXScope /ROXMiniScope which I wrote that do this. They let you
switch between 'scope' and 'FFT' displays. Available from

source code included. Not yet bothered to do a version for later RO boxes
as it'd need to use the USB Audio which most RO users don't have kit for,
alas.

However the above are for Linux and RO, not Windows. The snag being that
the !IyoScope relies on the hardware specific to the Iyonix. However I'd be
surprised if there weren't lots of alternatives.

Seems to be Iyonix only?

Must admit to not having use a RISC OS machine for anything audio related
for years. ;-)

** That job is much better done with "pink noise" - having equal energy per octave or part thereof results in a flat spectrum.

Accurate pink noise sources are not so easy to find and the reading will take some time to average out.

OTOH, for most audio electronics items, a sine / square wave generator plus scope is WAAYYYY better than either for response testing.

will do what you want. Obviously, such software will probably run on a
tablet too. Ah, the joys of having the power of a 1970s Cray
supercomputer in one's pocket....

Afraid "!IyoScope" is specific to that machine's mainboard hardware.

related for years. ;-)

Since RO machines can now access USB and HDMI audio the field for use is
rather wider than it used to be! :-)

I could 'port' my scope/FFT apps for the above. Haven't done it because
I've been doing other things and no-one has been asking. But a decent USB
device works fine for these purposes. Indeed, that's what I use for my
Linux apps. Even something like the 'Benchmark' ADCs and DACs can now be
used with RO if someone wishes. So RO users are no longer limited to
low-grade audio kit.

True. Hence my using 'say white noise' As the basic principle is the same.

Perhaps a suitable prog. would generate the required pink noise too.

I want something which gives a quicker way of doing a simple check.

I want something a bit better and more convenient than a smart phone can
do. ;-)
