Paging the DIY dinosaurs

Having listened to a pair of KEF 104aBs in a junk shop recently,
which use the B200 and a BD139 passive radiator in a ~40l box,
I wonder why I've never heard of anyone using a B139 and a BD139
instead of a transmission line or reflex enclosure.
Has anyone seen such a design?

Believe me, in TL speakers a single B139 is more than enough - they
will rattle windows at 10 paces!

Where was the junk shop - I'd buy the 104's if the price was right!

Kings Road Bazaar, St Leonards.
They would have to be really cheap as they were really tatty,
and it's pushing things to cross over a B200 at 3kHz.

Ah, misread that.

My Bailey-designed TLs had a B139, B110 and a T27 (original design was
T15 but KEF stopped making them) to which I added a Coles 4001 super
tweeter. If you like (pipe) organ music there is nowt to beat 'em
especially for pedal reeds, but I would say that 3-way units don't
handle the imaging as well as 2-ways.

I also had a pair of Cambridge R50's here for a while unitl SWMBO said
they had to go home. Interestingly the KEF crossover in the TLs were
marked such that the B110 was phase reversed when 'correctly'
connected, but in the R50's it was not. I did the wiring 'adjustment'
and it improved the sound no end, echoed by the owner when they went
back to him.

That's odd, as accurate imaging is a function of a consistent midrange,
and the B110 should be much better at that than a larger unit.

Also the T27 has a pretty extended HF response - I'm surprised you found
the Coles helped there at all.
