Default Recommendations wanted for CD Portable with GREAT SOUND QUALITY

I'm looking for recommendations for good CD portables on the basis of
SOUND QUALITY. An aspect which seems to be overlooked all over the net
for this equipment. Probably the reason why I can't find a decent
sounding player in the stores, too. I'm only interested in an
AUDIOPHILE'S point of view. Someone who's point of reference is only
consumer audio mass-market crapola is not going to have an opinion of
any value.

Here's my criteria:

- Above all, must have exceptional sound quality in its price class.
This should be the thing that impressed you the most about the player,
and it should be among the best sounding portable players you've
auditioned. By 'sound quality', I mean a sound that is musical, warm,
'liquid', detailed, open; with no boomy ill-defined bass and no
recessed midrange.
- By "price class", I mean I want something affordable, not too
pricey. I'd rather save the big bucks for my home equipment.
- I'd like to have plenty of volume; wimpy 5mw headphone outputs just
don't cut it. Must be loud enough to drown out the sound of your kids
screaming to have their diapers changed. Or at the very least, loud
enough to make you forget you're on the subway, and allow you to hear
the details in the music over the din of the noises around you.
- Must play CD-RW's
- Must have good anti-skip protection when anti-skip is turned off
- Must be able to take regular batteries (AA or AAA), not special $50
rechargeables that you can only find in the basement of a store in
NYC's Chinatown district

That's about it. It can be a discontinued model that's a few years
old, and I'll trade sound quality for battery life if I have to. Don't
care about the headphones it comes with. Here's a few models I came up
with after some research, that are supposed to have good sound quality
(but may not). If anyone who has heard one or more of these models can
confirm whether they are stellar performers in the sound dept, or can
confirm that they are no great shakes when it comes to reproducing
music, that'd be great (I'm particularly interested in comments on the
sound of the Sony D-FJ401 or one of the Panasonic SLCT's, since it's
not that hard to get a hold of them):

Panasonic SL-SX410, SL-S230, SL-320, SL-340, SX-300, SLCT-470,
SLCT-480, SLCT-580, SLSW895, 340, 341, 320, SL-260

Sony D-FJ401, D-EJ925, D-EJ825, D-EJ915, D-CJ01

TDK Mojo

Phillips AZ9101

Aiwa XP-500, XP-C507, XP-V74

Kenwood DPC-81

Magnavox AZ7467

Instead of just making your sound louder, you might want to try the newer
design headphones, which sit deeper in your ear. It takes a bit of getting
used to, but is very effective at blocking outside noise and sound is the
best without carrying round full sized cans!

My main criteria though is not loudness but sound quality of the
player; so in-ear bud-type headphones won't do anything to fix an
unmusical player. I'm also partial to my Jensen's and Koss Porta
Pro's. They're 'full sized cans' and although I don't mind wearing my
bud headphones, there aren't any that I've heard that can match the
type and quality of sound offered by the over ear headphones.
