PC Audio

Sorry if this seems off topic. There doesn't seem to be a PC audio
newsgroup, and I could do with a bit of help.
I have just bought a Terratec EWX 24/96 soundcard because it sounded just
the thing for me. No fancy bells and whistles, just quality 2 channel
stereo, in and out. Got it, loaded the software, but it is not self evident
to me (a pc audio newbie) how to record from the in-line. Is the EWX control
panel supposed to be able to do it? Or do I need to get to grips with
WaveLab Lite? Any help appreciated.

PS: If tracks are recorded as .wav files, is that the same as CD tracks?

I think I'll have to give Audiograbber a go. The bundled software with my
EWX seems to be a combination of flaky/useless (recording mp3) and unwanted
(synthesizing and MIDI). WaveLab Lite seems OK but doesn't do mp3.

AFAIK, wav is PCM format, the same as Cd audio uses, although a wav file
can be in different resolutions (quality) whereas cd audio is always
16bit/44kHz. With your card you could record to Wavs at 96/48, which is
the
same format but above cd quality.

I prefer Audiograbber for line-in recording, its a free download, you can
record to wav, or straight to LAME mp3, ogg vorbis etc.

I appreciate that software as well as hardware is necessary. MusicMatch
Jukebox was bundled with my EWX 24/96, I have paid $20 for an on-line
update, and it still doesn't work. All I want to do is record from the
line-in, and convert them to mp3 files on-the-fly recording them on hard
disk. Doesn't seem much to ask. At the moment I'm considering cutting my
losses with MusicMatch and buying Cool Edit 200.

No, but .wav files are what you need to burn CDs. The CD burning software
does the conversion for you.

Well, it is orientated to LP and cassette transfers to the PC with
my way of doing noise reduction.

But there are also many links towards similar web sites and lots of
software pages.
