Record a copy of the Archers off R4. It's recorded in an old fashioned way

Or poodle along to WHsmiths and take a look in the Spoken word section.
Plenty of good stuff there many radio plays.

The Anthony Hopkins version of Under Milk Wood is good.
Try your local library.

He has far too strange a voice for assessing audio kit - and he hams
it up to the eyeballs on this one, so no - poor choice.

The best advice I could give is to record a friend in as anechoic a
situation as possible; out in the garden is good. Use an
omnidirectional mic. Even the cheapest of electrets are plenty good
enough for this.

Now, when auditioning the speakers, play back at the same level your
friend speaks at. Close your eyes and decide if you are fooled - could
it be your friend actually standing there, or can you hear
"loudspeakery" artifacts - booming chesty tones, splashy sibilants
etc. Very few speakers will pass this test well as it is about as
severe a test as you will ever apply.
