Question is...I can't get the platter off to replace the belt. It comes

I do not know the SL3 so this may be wrong, so *take care*.
With my Technics SL1500 you lift the TT a short distance and the center
spindle comes up with it. But the spindle then reaches the end limit of its
vertical travel and then resists any further lifting of the TT. With the TT
still lifted you then tap the top of the center spindle gently with
something like a bit of wood to 'free' the TT from the spindle. The TT sits
on a cone and grips by 'interference fit' (i.e. friction, jammed on) in
normal use. Tapping the spindle knocks it downward and allows you to remove
the TT.
My deck is a direct drive one (i.e. no belt at all), so may well be quite
different to yours. Hence the above may well *not* be correct for your
deck. However I give the above info in case it is of use.
