It's rarely cheaper as what you gain by saving the labour is lost by
having to pay the retail cost of the bits.


If you're thinking audiophile, where a £10 interconnect is considered
almost ludicrously cheap and some people pay 10 times more for a gaudy
looking phono lead, making your own from quality (but not esoteric:-)
components is MUCH cheaper.
