You are mixing up your formats! Your question therefore should
have been "I want to make a DVD-R of audio CDs playable in a
DVD".

That's almost exactly what I said!!

Yes, I want my (DVD-A capable) DVD player to be play a compilation of my
favourite four or five CDs

So far so good.

that have been burned onto a DVD-R

Still going well here.

in DVD-A format....

Whoa!!!! You want to convert a red book CD (16 bit 44.1KHz sampling
frequency) to DVD-A which usually starts at 24/48 and goes up 24/192.

You keep talking about DVD-Audio when you really (I think) mean DVD-V
compliant formats. I have personally never tried exactly what you are
attempting to do but would suggest you make an MP3 320bps disc of you
favourites and cut to DVD-R. Very good quality and easily done and you will
fit heaps of tracks on.

To do exactly what you want to do and you would need to make a DVD-Video
(obviously without he video, menus and include an auto start) and load it
with your CDA tracks.

Hope this helps
